Bruce M. Yates, President and Founder

 
President and founder of Appropriate Balance Financial Services, Inc and a primary portfolio manager for the firm.  Bruce specializes in management of income-oriented securities and analysis of individual financial and investment situations.  On the faculty of the American Association of Senior Physicians for more than twelve years, he has spoken at seminars and conferences nationwide on the topics of risk management and the financial/investment changes coincident with retirement.  Bruce was a contributing author of the 1999 book, "Ways & Means: Maximize the Value of Your Retirement Savings," and is currently writing a book subtitled, "What Every Investor Should Know Before Asking Advice from a Broker, Bank or Financial Planner."
 
Prior to founding Appropriate Balance in 1984, Bruce spent five years as a Financial Consultant and Account Executive for Shearson/American Express and Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith.  Bruce earned his Certified Financial Manager designation from the Donald T. Regan School of Advanced Financial Management in New York in 1982.  He has completed advanced study in Risk Management, Applied Economics, Individual Taxation, Taxation of Business and Exempt Organizations, Trusts, Estates, and Gifts and Elements of Financial Planning.  Bruce has over thirty years of experience in investment management.

Robert M. Pennell, Principal and Chief Investment Strategist

 
Principal and a primary portfolio manager of Appropriate Balance Financial Services, Inc.  Bob specializes in market analysis and the development and evolution of equity portfolios.  Prior to merging with Appropriate Balance, Bob was President of Harvard Financial Advisors, a separate Registered Investment Advisor firm he founded in 1982. 
 
Bob has conducted investment seminars for dozens of Seattle-area companies and organizations, including Sisters of Providence, Port of Seattle, Scott Paper, Weyerhaeuser, and Boeing. 
 
Bob holds an M.B.A. from Harvard Graduate School of Business, as well as a B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Washington.  Prior to becoming an independent money manager in 1980, Bob was manager of Weyerhaeuser`s new Business Ventures Group for five years, Executive Vice President of an electronic instrument firm, and a fighter pilot in the U.S. Marine Corps.  Bob has over twenty-five years of investment management experience.

 
Marhe has been associated with Appropriate Balance Financial Services since its inception.  She specializes in portfolio analysis and management that focuses on both long-term growth and income-oriented strategies.
 
Prior to joining Appropriate Balance, Marhe studied engineering and business and was a co-owner of a large U.S. manufacturing firm that marketed internationally.  After negotiating its sale, Marhe joined Shearson/American Express in 1981 where she worked until joining Appropriate Balance in 1984.  Currently, Marhe enjoys working with people of all ages, assisting them in obtaining financial security for their future.  Supplemental studies have included courses in Economics, Advanced Accounting, Trusts and Estate Planning.
 
Marhe resides in Kenmore with her husband, Ken, and their three children.  Active in the community, Marhe has served as a Girl Scout Leader and currently serves as Chairperson for the Trust and Investment Committee at her Children's School.

 
Reg provides comprehensive wealth management services, with special emphasis on customized asset allocation and portfolio management strategies.  Since 1987, he has been a Certified Financial Planner and Appropriate Balance Advisor, emphasizing retirement planning and investment during retirement.  He also performs disparity analyses in marital dissolution cases and has provided expert testimony for a number of  these situations. 
 
He has an M.S.B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, a B.S. from North Carolina State University, and is a long standing member of the East King County Estate Planning Council.
 
 
 
Edwin Ta Woo, Equity Portfolio Manager, Financial Advisor

 
Eddie is an ABFS Equity Portfolio Manager and Financial Advisor. He specializes in the selection and analysis of no-load mutual funds, individual stocks and markets as well as the development and management of growth portfolio strategies.  He has been actively involved in establishing and refining many of the technical tools Appropriate Balance utilizes in the analysis and management monitoring of investments.  Prior to joining ABFS in 1996, he was an active stock investor for more than nine years and brought to the company a strong knowledge of stock tracking and analysis tools.
 
Eddie speaks both English and Chinese and has an extensive knowledge of Asian cultures.  Having lived in China for thirteen years, Eddie brings to Appropriate Balance a unique perspective for global investing.  He has a B.S. in Finance from Central Washington University.  
 

Mary Ann Ferreira, CFP®, Financial Advisor and Portfolio Manager


Mary Ann not only serves as financial advisor to many ABFS clients, but is also co-manager of ABFS's fixed income strategy.  She joined Appropriate Balance in 2001 with more than 14 years of prior experience in the securities industry.

Mary Ann was instrumental in the formation in 1983 (and was a general partner) of Tuttle & Co., which was a consulting company for mortgage companies and savings and loans. Previously, she worked at various branch offices of major securities firms, assisting in daily institutional trading activities.

Mary Ann is active in the community and a Board Member for Eastside Enrichment and Seattle Wheelchair Rugby Association.  She lives in Renton, WA with her adopted twins. 

Richard A. Merrifield II, CFP ®, Wealth Management Advisor, Equity Portfolio Manager


Rich joined Appropriate Balance in August of 2006 as an Investment Advisor and Equity Portfolio Manager.  He brings two-decades of technical skills in asset selection and portfolio management.  Rich is also a strong proponent of comprehensive financial planning with considerable focus applied to tax strategy and investment portfolio construction.

Rich is a native of the mid-Atlantic region and holds a B.S. in Latin American Affairs from Ohio University.  Prior to joining Appropriate Balance, Rich was a consultant to professional investment managers, helping them develop their portfolio management systems.  Before that, he worked with American Express as a Financial Planner, Portfolio Strategist and Training Manager.  Rich also has experience in Venture Capital, has taught college courses on investing and financial planning, and has contributed thousands of hours in the roles of founder, officer and board member for several non-profit organizations in Arizona and Washington.

Rich lived and worked throughout Latin America from 1983-1986.  He is an avid backpacker, runner and fitness nut.  Since 1997, Rich has been an active resident in the Capital Hill neighborhood (in downtown Seattle). 

Joe Louis Cervantes,  CFP®


Joe joined the Appropriate Balance family in June 2008.  He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Washington in 1990, then spent the first nine years of his career in the estate planning area of insurance where he applied advanced methodologies to help families address complicated estate tax issues.  Joe is licensed in all lines of insurance. 

In 1997, Joe began formally bolstering his already considerable knowledge of investments by obtaining the NASD Series 6, 7, 31, 63, and 65 licenses.  He is constantly expanding his knowledge for the benefit of his clients, and has recently added the Certified Financial Planner TM designation to his list of education and training.  With over 19 years experience in various aspects of comprehensive wealth management, Joe brings a great deal of knowledge and expertise to the ABFS team.

Joe lives in Woodinville, Washington with his wife and two daughters (4 & 10).  Joe also serves as a volunteer on the Trust and Investment Committee for Bellevue Christian School. 

Randall C. Buck, CFA, Chief Financial Officer 


Randall joined Appropriate Balance in March 2009 as Chief Investment Officer (CIO) and member of the equity portfolio management team. Randall has more than 20 years of investment management experience. He has served in senior investment management roles for leading institutional and wealth management firms, including Harris Investment Management in Chicago and Freestone Capital Management in Seattle.

His expertise includes asset allocation, portfolio management and research. He has successfully developed and managed equity portfolio strategies including sophisticated hedge fund strategies. 

Randall earned a B.A. (honors) in Business and Economics from Simon Fraser University and an MBA (finance) from the Graduate School of Business at the University of Chicago. He has held the CFA designation for more than 20 years and is a member of the Investment Analyst Societies of Seattle and Chicago.

Randall served on the founding Executive Board of The Children’s Heart Foundation and is on the Advocates Council of Children of the Nations. He has coached youth soccer for fourteen years and enjoys cycling, skiing and golf. Randall lives in Bellevue with his wife Jane and their four children. 
 

Jason Preti, Financial Planner 


Jason joined ABFS in 2009 as a Financial Planner and Client Services Associate.  He has successfully passed the CFP® Certification examination and already has two years of experience in financial planning.  After 9 years in the Marine Corps, Jason moved to Washington to complete his Bachelors degree in Business.
